Warm Bodies

Movie night last week was the much more delightful film "Warm Bodies."  This movie takes place 8 years after the zombie apocalypse we all know is coming, but has the unique aspect of looking at the world through the eyes of the zombies themselves.  It has a Romeo and Juliet theme, but half of everyone is already dead before the curtain rises.  Shakespeare would've loved that.   Things start to change for the zombies, possibly for the better, but are challenged by arrogant humans and a ruthless race of zombies known as "bonies."

The movie does suffer a little through actors who vaguely look like bigger name actors but aren't.  Of course you have Dave Franco, playing his brother James Franco as someone who dies far earlier than expected.  Then you have the male lead, Nicholas Hoult as Zac Efron as Broody Zombie.  Finally there's Teresa Palmer as Kristen Stewart as Actually Likable.  The funny thing is, these actors all do a better job than I'd expect their doppelgangers would.

The film has a great unique way of telling the story through a perspective you never see, while still being relatable through common themes and human emotions.  While it's not much of a comedy there are plenty of great jokes and moments, Rob Corddry commonly breaking character to provide many of them.  The soundtrack is excellent containing plenty of original scores that heighten action and emotion and great licensed songs at lighter moments.  The visuals and effects are equally as impressive, even if the Bonies feel a little copy-pasted sometimes.

Before I get any hate, I still firmly denounce the ridiculous notion that love can cure zombies.

A Good Day to Die Hard

Yippee Ki-Yay indeed.  A Good Day to Die Hard, or aGDtDH (which sounds like the noise you make while drowning) premiered in theaters on Valentine's Day.  I went to see it opening day not because I had a date, but because it seemed healthier than polishing off two more pints of Ben & Jerry's Half Baked.

Unfortunately this turned out to be a poor choice for my inaugural review.  This wasn't' because the movie was terrible, or because you're going to see it regardless of what I say.  It was a poor choice because during the first action sequence my brain went numb and didn't warm back up until the credits rolled.  Here's what I remember about the plot:

  • Bruce Willis goes to Russia because he hasn't blown it up yet.
  • Bruce Willis proceeds to blow up Russia.
There's supposed to be a touching story about father and son and some well deserved reconciliation, since as far as I know the son (played by Jai Courtney) had never been mentioned in a previous film.  You're not going to care about that though, nor are you going to care about any of the other characters.  The plot is inconsequential since it's readily apparent that everyone is going to end up filled with bullets or killed in some other mildly creative way.

If you turn your brain off and don't care about plot, characters, or basic physics, aGDtDH is still enjoyable.  Bruce Willis is smug and funny, the action is ridiculous, and Justin Long's character from Die Hard 4 makes no appearance.
You won't be missed.

Welcome!

This is a blog where I'll be reviewing books and movies this year!  I have 2 things going on: 1) I've challenged myself to watch at least one movie a week, in theaters, for the whole year.  2) I've joined the DeFranco Book Club on Goodreads.com, so I'll be reviewing books along with Phil throughout the year.

I'm already 6 movies in for this year, and I'm not going to go back and review them since they're not as fresh in my mind.  All the ones I see from now on will get a review though!
